Take counsel with Persephone

Some time ago I answered a question at Quora “How can I connect to Persephone?”,

to which I replied, “what would the Queen of the Dead want from you?”

which may have been interpreted as a judgement, but that is far from the truth.

As Salutius wrote, the first benefit of myths and symbols is that “that they excite us to inquiry, and do not suffer our cogitative power to remain in indolent rest”, i.e., instead of worshiping a deity because it is tradition or everyone else does it, one should ask ourselves - why is there a Goddess of Death? - and - Is She helpful or harmful? - and also - why is She worthy of cult?

That is why, according to Salutius, “concealing truth in fables (and symbols), prevents the contempt of the former (the lazy), (but) compels the latter to philosophize (to dig into symbology, to interpret and apply it to daily life).” which is why mythology was designed in the first place, and second, because realizing the “apparent absurdity (in myths), the soul immediately conceiving these discourses to be concealments, may understand that the truth which they contain is to be involved in profound and occult silence.” Salutius, On the Gods and the Cosmos, Chapter III

And that is how you get to point of symbol and cult.

So my answer was intended to shake and make the person question itself and its “ideas”, not to divert or shun.

Because if we look at Olympiodorus’ statement is his commentary on the Phaedo of Plato that “The soul descends Corically, or after the manner of Proserpine, into generation”, one can see that Persephone is quite closer than we actually think She is.

Just as Persephone is abducted into Hades (by the will of Zeus), so too the human soul is drawn from its original place to a foreign one (matter, body, the world of generation).

So how can the Soul in Hades, the “Queen of Death”, be a counseling, beneficial Goddess?

As to the how in the greek tradition, material is lacking, tradition has been interrupted and knowledge has been lost, but we can find some understanding in hindu Vedanta and Yoga, because they teach to precisely look for answers within ourselves.

If our soul is our innermost self, that is who or what can answers the questions we seek, because as the observer, that is who possesses perception, intelligence, which gets us to the point of Persephone.

These indian traditions teach us to observe ourselves, and our own perception. Once we realize that the observer (our perception) is being observed, we realize that that is how the soul, the creature, acknowledges its source or parent. There is a reflection in ourselves, a self-reflection, and a realization that it is the Awareness Itself that is behind us and everything. This is hard to put in words, it should be experienced to be understood.

Take your time and meditation to realize this.

And that is how you can take counsel with Persephone, and revere Her, because She is right within you.
